The Repair Shop On BBC One

Published on Monday, January 9th, 2023

This Tuesday 10th January, 2023, Dick’s daughter Juliet features on the BBC’s The Repair Shop with Dick’s childhood toy!

Juliet came to the workshop hoping that they can repair her father’s stuffed rabbit Wilfred, who was given to Dick when he was a very small boy.

After nearly a century of life, most of it spent in Dick’s study watching him write over 130 children’s books, Wilfred is looking worse for wear. Teddy bear ladies Julie and Amanda work together to put the hop back in his step.

You can see Wilfred hanging up in the picture below, keeping an eye on proceedings and making sure Dick’s writing is up to scratch!

Tune in to BBC 1 on Tuesday 10th January at 3.45pm – 4.30pm, or catch up on the iPlayer.

I watched the programme – lovely. To my shame I must admit to never having heard of Dick, not being familiar with children’s writers of recent years, so looked him up because of the programme. Just out of curiosity, was the rabbit named after, or derived from, a popular Daily Mirror cartoon strip of the time, “Pip, Squeak and Wilfred”, as the character named Wilfred was a rabbit. Anyway, Julie and Amanda did a superb job, Juliette was rightly delighted and I hope Wilfred – and the books – continues for many more years.

Hello John. You are exactly right! Wilfred is named after the rabbit character from the Daily Mirror. Thank you so much for your kind words. We hope so too!
